The meaning of dreams

Everyone dreams but not everyone is always aware of his or her dreams. A bit of awareness often causes more interest in a dream and its meaning. Dreams can be frightening, calming, pleasant, boring, happy, frustrating, bizarre or downright awkward. Do these dreams have a deeper meaning? Can you learn your unconscious wishes and desires by interpreting your dreams? Since ancient times people have understood that dreams have significance and have tried to figure out what they mean.

A dream is actually a collection of images, sounds, thoughts and feelings that come together when you sleep. Dreams are often about the things that occupy you and are formed by expectations that you create. This contributes to making dreams feel so real and feeling you can almost touch them. You sleep in different phases throughout the night and these are all unique. One of these phases is the REM-(Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, also called the dream sleep. Let’s take a closer look at this so-called dream sleep.

REM sleep is dream sleep

Every night you go through a number of different sleep phases. The first sleep phase lasts only three to five minutes on average and is a transitional phase between the waking and sleeping state. You recognize it, you feel a shock and feel, for example, that you are falling. This is a sleep state that can come forward in this first sleep phase. In the second stage of sleep you will sleep deeper and then end up in a very deep sleep, phase three and four often come together. After phase four you enter the stage of the REM sleep. Dreams are particularly evident during the REM sleep, which is why it is also called dream sleep. Generally, the dreams last between 5 to 10 minutes. As the night progresses, the REM sleep phases last longer and longer. Every person dreams, even if you cannot remember. Every night about one and a half to two hours long you are dreaming, about five to seven dreams a night.

Lucid dreams

It is possible that you know that you are dreaming during dream sleep, or REM sleep. This is also called a lucid dream. You have the realization that you are sleeping in bed, but that everything around you is a dream. And yet you keep on dreaming. A lucid dream feels lifelike, as if you are awake and you walk through your dream. Lucid dreams is simply said to be dreaming with dream consciousness, so you are actually aware that you are dreaming while you are dreaming.

Spiritual meaning of dreams

Questions like ‘What is a dream?’ and ‘what does this serve?’, questions about a dream and the meaning of the dream come forward. Some of our psychics can give you more clarity about this. Research shows that dreams are often a processing moment of the day. People often dream about experiences of their day in a simple and unambiguous way. The events pass as in a kind of film. In a dream, there is always one thing that you focus your attention on, thinking in a dream cannot be more complicated than that. The brain works in a different way at night, unlocking the best ideas during your dreams. Past and present come together in a dream so that you could make connections that you would never think of during the day. During a dream, a distance often falls away, people can change in other people and it is even possible to fly.

Every dream contains a storyline. Every action that emerges in a dream takes as much time as it would during the day. However, distances blur, creating speed in a dream that gives the feeling that a dream passes by in a flash.

Symbolism is found in many dreams. For example, dreaming about water is about your emotions. Dreams about vehicles (cars, airplanes, bicycles, etc.) are about your life path. For example, if you dream that you are driving a car and you have no control over the car, this may mean that you feel that you have no control over your daily life. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common dreams and what some of the most popular dream interpretation books have to say about them.

  • Dreams about being naked in public
A strange, but very common dream. Most experts agree it probably doesn’t represent a literal desire to be naked in public, but might indicate that you are afraid of revealing your imperfections and shortcomings.
  • Dreams about being pregnant
While dreams about being pregnant can be interpreted in different ways, a pregnancy dream might indicate your feelings about change or a goal in your life. Pregnancy dreams are typically connected to something else in your life that is in a growing and development phase.
  • Dreams about teeth falling out
This common dream can represent everything from a major life change to lack of self-esteem; from the fear of getting older to money issues; from symbolizing rebirth to regretting something you’ve said.
  • Dreams about being chased
Dreaming about being chased generally means that you are being told by your unconsciousness that you’re avoiding an issue or a person. Dream interpreters say it might indicate a desire to escape from your own fears or desires. In such dreams, context is important, which includes identifying the chaser. For example, being chased by an animal might indicate that you are hiding from your own passions, anger, and other feelings.
  • Dreams about cheating
Being cheated on in a dream can often feel so real that you actually go and accuse your significant other of it. They can be incredibly distressing. Often dreams about infidelity are rarely about cheating, but rather more about your own feelings of insecurity. This is a ‘what if’ dream. You are testing the limits of reality.
  • Dreams about dying
Death is another common subject of dreams and one that can be particularly disconcerting. There are lots of different interpretations of death dreams, but basically, they all boil down to the fact that death symbolizes an ending or transition in your life. They often reflect anxiety about change or a fear of the unknown. Because like death, with change we do not know what is on the other side.
  • Dreams about flying
Often times, flying represents a sense of freedom and independence. Flying dreams serve as a sort of escape from the pressures of the real world (which is represented by the ground).
